A clown at a birthday party, a Broadway show, stadium rock music, or your friends fighting over the last potato chip are all examples of entertainment. The word comes from the Old French entretenir meaning “to hold together,” and originally was associated with hospitality–as in keeping guests happy. It morphed into the amusement and distraction that we now think of as entertainment, with visual entertainment referring to things you like to look at and audio entertainment referring to stuff you like to listen to.
