A short piece of writing on a subject of interest to the general public. This type of article can be found in newspapers, magazines and journals.
A topic of great importance that needs to be addressed, or a problem of particular concern: “He’s got some issues”.
An act of issuing; promulgation; distribution: The post office issued new stamps.
The United Nations addresses a range of global issues, including conflict resolution, peacekeeping and the advancement of women. It also works on environmental issues, such as disaster relief and the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
If you want to write an issue-oriented article, make sure that your opinions are clearly stated, and well supported by facts. It’s fine to criticize – constructively – but never use your articles to attack people personally. If you’re going to be an issue-oriented blogger, you must be willing to withstand the angry emails and rants that are bound to come your way.
To ensure that your articles are credible, find out as much as you can about the topic on which you’re writing. Interview the right sources, and spend a lot of time researching your subject. If you can’t find enough information on your own, consider hiring a research assistant. Make sure that your sources are legitimate; avoid writing about things that everyone knows about. If your readers can learn all they need to know about a topic in 30 seconds on Google, there’s no point in you writing about it.
