From the Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside,” entertain is an activity that holds a person’s interest and attention. It can also give pleasure and delight.
It requires consumer activity. Oliver and Barstsch (2010) state that entertainment is an objectively understood activity that includes communication between text and audience, provides an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience to exist and occurs in a passive form.
Something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement: a diverting play; an agreeable occupation for the mind: Solving the daily crossword puzzle is entertaining to many.
